A Guide to Traveling to/from Williamsburg

Updated August 2025

If you’re not taking the Amtrak, you have a couple other options other than driving.

Take the Bus

Flixbus has resumed service to Williamsburg recently, after the company went through restructuring and paused service for a year. They run intercity buses travel all across Virginia and further, although there may be transfers.

As of August 2025, it’s about $30 to get to either Charlottesville or DC, but far less comfortable (and reliable) than the Amtrak in our opinion and there’s no student discount.

Fares do not change as drastically as Amtrak however, so if you can’t find a good deal with Amtrak the bus can be significantly cheaper.

Book either on the Greyhound or Flixbus website. Buses leave from the Train Station/Transportation Center.

Coming this Spring 2026, the Virginia Department for Rail and Public Transportation will start a new bus service to from Norfolk to Charlottesville, stopping at Williamsburg, filling in a gap in service that neither Flixbus or Amtrak serve directly.

Carpool

Ask people you know for a ride! I would trust GroupMe over Yikyak though. There is a Facebook group to organize carpools here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/172321165319/

Airport

Take an organized shutter or share a Uber/Lyft to the Newport News/Williamsburg International.

Personally I have never had to fly out of Williamsburg, so let me know if you have any tips!
